"Is it permanent?" is one of the first things people ask about laser hair removal, and you'll see a lot of big promises online. Here's the honest answer: what laser can realistically do, why some hair can come back, and how to keep your results for the long term.
Permanent reduction, not removal
Laser hair removal gives a long-lasting reduction in hair. By the end of a full course, most clients see a 70–90% reduction, and the hair that remains is usually finer and lighter. Because new hairs can be triggered over time, occasional top-up sessions keep results looking their best.
Why "reduction" and not "removal"?
Laser works by heating and damaging the hair follicle, so it can't grow a hair as easily again. Most treated follicles are significantly weakened, which is why results last so long.
But we're all born with dormant follicles, ones that aren't producing hair right now. Life changes such as pregnancy, hormonal conditions like PCOS/PMOS, menopause and some medications can wake these follicles up, and new hair can appear in an area that's already been treated.
That's why reputable clinics talk about permanent hair reduction, not permanent removal. If anyone promises you'll never see another hair, be cautious.
Why you need a course of sessions
Hair grows in cycles, and at any one time your hairs are at different stages. The laser can only treat hairs in their active growth stage, so each session catches a different group of hairs.
Most people need 6 to 10 sessions, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, to treat all the hairs in an area. Stopping after one or two sessions is one of the most common reasons people feel laser "didn't work". What to expect after your first session
Myths and facts
"One session and the hair is gone for good"
A single session only treats hairs in their growth stage. A full course is needed for lasting results.
The hair that remains is usually finer
Most clients find any regrowth is finer, lighter and slower, so it's much easier to manage.
"Laser works on every hair colour"
The laser targets pigment, so grey, white, blonde and red hair don't respond well to any laser.
Hormones can bring new hair
Pregnancy, PCOS/PMOS and menopause can stimulate new growth, which top-up sessions can treat.
What affects how long your results last?
Your hair colour
Dark, coarse hair responds best. Fine, light or grey hair may not respond at all, and I'll tell you honestly at your consultation.
Your hormones
Hormonal hair, for example on the chin or jawline, often needs ongoing maintenance. Laser hair removal for PCOS/PMOS
Completing your course
Finishing all your sessions, at the right spacing, gives the best long-term results.
No waxing or plucking between sessions
These remove the hair root that the laser needs to target. Shaving is the only hair removal to use during your course.

Keeping your results: top-up sessions
Once your course is complete, a few top-ups keep you smooth. Here's what I usually recommend:
- Your course
6 to 10 sessions, spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart.
- About 6 months later
A single top-up session on each treated area.
- Then once a year
An annual top-up to catch any new hairs. Hormonal hair may need top-ups more often.
Worth knowing: even with top-ups, laser usually works out cheaper than years of waxing. See how the costs compare
Frequently asked questions
Is laser hair removal permanent?
Laser gives permanent hair reduction rather than permanent removal. Most clients see a 70–90% reduction after a full course, and occasional top-ups keep results consistent, as hormones can trigger new hair over time.
How long do laser hair removal results last?
The treated follicles are significantly weakened, so results are long-lasting. Most people only need a top-up about 6 months after their course, then once a year.
Will my hair grow back after pregnancy?
It can. Pregnancy hormones can wake up dormant follicles, so some new hair may appear. A few top-up sessions after pregnancy and breastfeeding can treat it.
Does laser work on grey or blonde hair?
Unfortunately not. Laser targets the pigment in the hair, so grey, white, blonde and red hairs don't absorb enough energy to be treated.
Why is my hair growing back after laser?
During a course, some regrowth between sessions is normal, as hairs that were resting start to grow. After a course, new hair is usually caused by hormones, and top-up sessions can treat it.
