If you have brown or Black skin, you may have been told laser hair removal isn't for you, or had a treatment that didn't feel right. At Luminier, treating darker skin tones is one of our specialisms. We use the Polaris Medical Nd:YAG laser, a technology widely recommended for darker skin, and every treatment is planned around your individual skin and hair.
Laser hair removal works by targeting melanin, the pigment in your hair. The challenge is that darker skin also contains more melanin in its surface layer. With the wrong type of laser or the wrong settings, the skin can absorb energy meant for the hair, which raises the risk of burns or changes in skin colour.
That's why the choice of laser, and the experience of the person using it, matters so much more for skin types IV to VI.
The Polaris Medical laser uses a 1064nm Nd:YAG wavelength. This longer wavelength travels deeper into the skin and is less absorbed by the pigment on the surface, so more of the energy reaches the hair follicle. It is widely regarded as one of the most suitable laser options for darker skin tones.
We talk through your skin, hair, medical history and any medication that could affect treatment.
We test a small area at least 48 hours before your first session and check how your skin responds.
Energy, pulse length and cooling are adjusted to your skin tone and hair, not taken from a factory preset.
Monika carries out every treatment herself, so your settings and progress are tracked session to session.

Many people with coarse, curly hair get painful ingrown hairs from shaving or waxing. Reducing hair growth with laser can help reduce these over time.
Constant hair removal can leave the skin irritated or darker in places. Fewer hairs means less shaving, giving your skin a chance to settle.
Hair on the chin, jawline, neck or stomach is often linked to hormones. We plan realistic treatment and maintenance schedules for hormonal hair.
Hair grows in cycles, and the laser can only treat hairs in their active growth phase, which is why a course is needed. Occasional top-up sessions keep results consistent. Results & sessions explained
Laser works best on dark hair. Very fine, light, grey or red hair doesn't contain enough pigment to respond, and we'll tell you honestly at your consultation if laser isn't right for you.
Laser hair removal can be carried out safely on Black and brown skin when the right laser is used by a trained practitioner. The Nd:YAG laser is well suited to skin types IV to VI, and a patch test lets us check how your skin responds before your first full session.
Some people find Nd:YAG treatment slightly more intense than other lasers because it works deeper in the skin. Most clients describe it as a quick snap followed by warmth. Our cooling system helps keep you comfortable, and we can adjust the pace if you need a break.
Any laser treatment carries a small risk of temporary changes in skin colour, especially if the skin has been in the sun recently. Using the Nd:YAG laser, patch testing and following aftercare advice keep this risk low. We'll explain everything at your consultation.
Avoid sun exposure, sunbeds and fake tan for at least 14 days before your session, and don't wax, pluck or use hair removal creams for two weeks. Shave the area within 24 hours of your appointment.
